Hinata, un estudiante de secundaria siente un repentino amor al voleibol después de ver un partido del Campeonato Nacional en la televisión. Aún con su altura, él se decide seguir los pasos de jugador estrella del campeonato, apodado el "Pequeño Gigante", después de ver sus juegos. Él crea un club de voleibol y comienza a practicar por sí mismo. Eventualmente otros cinco miembros se unen al equipo por su último año de secundaria, pero son derrotados en su primer torneo por el equipo favorito del campeonato, que incluye el llamado "Rey de la Corte" Tobio Kageyama. Aunque el equipo de Hinata sufre una derrota miserable él promete superar finalmente Kageyama y derrotarlo.
